Teaching Two Things One Way: Brigadeiros and Digital Illustrations

For this assignment I decided to teach how to make assorted brigadeiros and how to make a digital illustration through a blogpost on this site. There are many different ways to do these two things but I would be showing the way I make them.

Brigadeiros are a traditional Brazilian dessert that classically contains condensed milk, butter and cocoa powder formed into a small bite-sized ball (like a chocolate truffle) and rolled in toppings (usually chocolate sprinkles). However, they can be made in other flavors and toppings. I wanted to teach two flavors with three different toppings: Classic chocolate brigadeiro with crushed caramel+butterscotch topping and traditional chocolate sprinkles, and a cookies and cream brigadeiro.

In terms of illustrations there are many different processes and things you can illustrate. Generally artists have a preferred style and process to their work. I usually start with a hand-drawn sketch that I scan in and then use as the base for my digital illustration. I tend to like to draw characters but this same process I use can be used for pretty much any illustration. I do use tools that may generally not be available to everyone (Adobe Suite + Intuos Drawing Tablet) but you could use any drawing software and tools at your disposal.

The reason I chose Wix as my medium is that my blog for assignments is hosted here already and I definitely wanted to do this via a blog post. In the last assignment where we had to learn two things in two different ways, the written forms accompanied by short videos and images worked best for me (especially for complicated processes, because you can take your time) vs the video format that you have to rewatch multiple times and keep pausing (this eliminated many possible platforms for me like YouTube, Instagram, Lynda or Skillshare). I also like the idea of interacting with multiple users asynchronously. People won’t necessarily look the posts at the same time and go through the process at the same time. I like the idea of getting comments and feedback at different times and helping people individually with their struggles. As a shy person, I also recognize the advantage of being able to contact the teacher in an out-of-class setting and as teacher I appreciate a public forum where my answers to the questions could potentially help others with same doubts.

I like the fact that I can insert GIFs and images to support my written instructions and give a visual goalpost for each step in the process. If I wanted to, I could also place a long video with the long process for people who prefer that way of learning so this platform allows for flexibility as well.

In terms of sharing it’s easy to copy paste the link to the article and share it through any other platform because Wix is public.

I’m looking forward to start!
